Why I became a member of the 100+ Women Northumberland

My maternal grandmother was one of the kindest people I knew.  She grew up in poverty and never had a lot of money throughout her adult life, yet she always found time to give back to her community.  As a child I never understood what that meant but as I got older I realized that time can be so much more valuable than money when helping others.  It’s something that I have tried to aspire to, in my grandmother’s honour. 
 
I’ve lived in Northumberland County for 21 years and commuted for 19 of those years which did not leave me a lot of time to volunteer locally. That was certainly something I felt I was missing and when I stopped commuting I really wanted to give back to my community.  When I heard about 100+ Women Northumberland I was in awe and it took me all of two minutes to jump in.  What an incredible concept: bringing like-minded women together to leverage small, individual donations into larger, collective grants.  Simple, powerful, effective AND we get to learn about some of our wonderful, local charities that I would not have known about otherwise.  
 
I am proud and honoured to be a part of this amazing group of women.

Why I became a member of the 100+ Women Northumberland

As a fatherless child growing up in poverty there were not many supports for my mother who was left to raise 8 children alone.  Growing up with the stigmatization of being poor and being raised in row housing, I personally know the importance of the local non-profits and how far they need to stretch their budget to assist families like mine.

I remember the Food Baskets and Christmas Presents that we received along the way from the local Food Bank and the army of woman it took putting those baskets together. Times have changed since the 1970’s yet we still have so many areas of our community underfinanced and underserved. Seeing the agencies and non-profits no matter what sector they are supporting gives me great pride that while I don’t have a ton of money financially, I can still provide my time and some financial support.

As a local business owner and Mom of two kids now moving into university and their careers, I still have that yearning to “pay it forward”.   I still need to teach my children the values of community support and volunteering. We only have one opportunity to leave a legacy. Mine will be to lead by example.  

Lastly, I get to partner with some amazing women in Northumberland County and the surrounding areas.  Truly, the honour is mine.

“Community is at the heart of everything I do. I believe it takes all of us to build a village where we can all see ourselves, where we can support one another, and where we can invest in charitable organizations doing good work to change lives. This is why I started 100 Women Who Care Northumberland five years ago.

To bring together diverse women to connect, learn, and give back. I experienced the impact of the 100 People Who Care movement when I lived in Melbourne. In moving back to the place that raised me I knew I wanted to ignite a philanthropic spark that would transform how we give: collectively, together.

Today, we now have four giving chapters, including 100 Guys Northumberland, 100 Women Brighton and 100 Kids Northumberland. Our women’s group has donated over $110,000 to twenty charities with approximately 120 members each year.

This community of donors – of giving, gracious hearts – that we’re cultivating is truly one of my favourite things. I’m proud to be amongst 100 Women Who Care living in Northumberland.”

Promise Land Animal Sanctuary

PROMISED LAND ANIMAL SANCTUARY RECEIVES GRANT FROM 100+ WOMEN NORTHUMBERLAND

NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY – Promised Land Animal Sanctuary (PLAS) is excited to announce we have received a $5,700 grant from 100+ Women Northumberland. PLAS’s mission is to provide care and permanent sanctuary to neglected, abused, homeless and older farm and domestic animals in need, and to promote a kind and compassionate lifestyle through humane education. We are a registered charity and are funded entirely by public donations.

This generous grant from 100+ Women will help support a campaign called ‘Reasons to Love’, which will install signage on the sanctuary grounds, highlighting little-known facts about farmed animals, in an effort to educate the sanctuary visitors and facilitate a compassionate human-animal bond. As well, printed pamphlets will be handed out offering resources for a healthy, cruelty-free lifestyle.

Since opening its gates in 2017, PLAS has rescued over 150 animals and is currently home to 78 furred and feathered residents. “We fill a need in the community by taking in animals that local residents can no longer properly take care of, for various reasons”, says Kat Krylov, executive director. “All of our residents receive the best of care for the rest of their lives, which includes proper shelter, good nutrition, the best veterinary care and of course lots and lots of love”.
