Why I became a member of the 100+ Women Northumberland

Northumberland has always been home to me. In the late 1970’s my parents pursued a dream that
uprooted our family to Florida for several years. My sister Lisa and I both married and had children in
Florida – and yet it never felt like home. Fortunately, we both successfully moved our families back
home to Northumberland (including our American husbands) in 1999 and 2000. We both believe the
greatest gift we could have given our children was the opportunity to grow up in this community. And
living in the US for 24 years made me appreciate this even more.

My husband Nathan’s father died when Nathan was 14, leaving behind his mother and four children
with no insurance and a small widow’s pension from the Navy. Times were very tough – they were
poor, and if it were not for the giving community and the church it would have been impossible.
We have raised our boys to have grateful, generous hearts and be acutely aware of those less fortunate.
They have filled me with pride on many occasions for their quiet and anonymous giving.

When I first learned of 100 Women I was immediately drawn. The perfect combination of a beautiful
generous community coming together to support those in need. The concept is brilliant, creating a
collective contribution that makes a meaningful impact on a deserving charity. I also love the
awareness and opportunity to learn about the many amazing organizations doing great work in our
community.

Nathan and our two sons Nate and Zak are part of 100 Men Northumberland. Nate’s fiancé Olie is part
of 100 Women. As a family, the association with 100 Women/Men has made us more aware of the
needs in our community and the perfect channel to focus our energy and resources.

Why I became a member of the 100+ Women Northumberland

I love the idea of combining my “tiny” donation with those of other women to make a BIG impact on our community, our county and our country! I think of it as women getting together to make a quilt – small bits of fabric sewn together with love and intention to provide warmth when life gets difficult.
 
I hope other women will come and join us on this wonderful evening together – 4 times a year doesn’t take a big commitment, but makes such a difference in Northumberland County!

Why I became a member of the 100+ Women Northumberland

My maternal grandmother was one of the kindest people I knew.  She grew up in poverty and never had a lot of money throughout her adult life, yet she always found time to give back to her community.  As a child I never understood what that meant but as I got older I realized that time can be so much more valuable than money when helping others.  It’s something that I have tried to aspire to, in my grandmother’s honour. 
 
I’ve lived in Northumberland County for 21 years and commuted for 19 of those years which did not leave me a lot of time to volunteer locally. That was certainly something I felt I was missing and when I stopped commuting I really wanted to give back to my community.  When I heard about 100+ Women Northumberland I was in awe and it took me all of two minutes to jump in.  What an incredible concept: bringing like-minded women together to leverage small, individual donations into larger, collective grants.  Simple, powerful, effective AND we get to learn about some of our wonderful, local charities that I would not have known about otherwise.  
 
I am proud and honoured to be a part of this amazing group of women.

Why I became a member of the 100+ Women Northumberland

As a fatherless child growing up in poverty there were not many supports for my mother who was left to raise 8 children alone.  Growing up with the stigmatization of being poor and being raised in row housing, I personally know the importance of the local non-profits and how far they need to stretch their budget to assist families like mine.

I remember the Food Baskets and Christmas Presents that we received along the way from the local Food Bank and the army of woman it took putting those baskets together. Times have changed since the 1970’s yet we still have so many areas of our community underfinanced and underserved. Seeing the agencies and non-profits no matter what sector they are supporting gives me great pride that while I don’t have a ton of money financially, I can still provide my time and some financial support.

As a local business owner and Mom of two kids now moving into university and their careers, I still have that yearning to “pay it forward”.   I still need to teach my children the values of community support and volunteering. We only have one opportunity to leave a legacy. Mine will be to lead by example.  

Lastly, I get to partner with some amazing women in Northumberland County and the surrounding areas.  Truly, the honour is mine.

“Community is at the heart of everything I do. I believe it takes all of us to build a village where we can all see ourselves, where we can support one another, and where we can invest in charitable organizations doing good work to change lives. This is why I started 100 Women Who Care Northumberland five years ago.

To bring together diverse women to connect, learn, and give back. I experienced the impact of the 100 People Who Care movement when I lived in Melbourne. In moving back to the place that raised me I knew I wanted to ignite a philanthropic spark that would transform how we give: collectively, together.

Today, we now have four giving chapters, including 100 Guys Northumberland, 100 Women Brighton and 100 Kids Northumberland. Our women’s group has donated over $110,000 to twenty charities with approximately 120 members each year.

This community of donors – of giving, gracious hearts – that we’re cultivating is truly one of my favourite things. I’m proud to be amongst 100 Women Who Care living in Northumberland.”
