Friends of the Forest Centre Foundation receives June 2022 Grant in the amount of $7,022

Friends of the Forest Centre Foundation, a charitable foundation for the Ganaraska Forest Centre Outdoor Education Program,is excited to be the recipient of a $7,022 grant from 100+ Women Who Care Northumberland to support its outdoor environmental education program.

The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) operates the Ganaraska Forest Centre (GFC) as an outdoor environmental education and conference centre based in Campbellcroft, ON. The GFC is a non-profit facility focused on delivering environmental outdoor education programming for kindergarten to post graduate students utilizing the outdoors as the classroom.

For the past few years, the education staff have been focusing on redesigning several of the program spaces to ensure all students can be active participants in the programming. Any child with a disability deserves the right to be able to fully participate in any activity. With this mission at the forefront of all the planning and redevelopment, GRCA is looking towards the next program area to redesign and build – the beaver ponds. The beaver pond program is a very popular program that is taught several times a week in May and June as well as September to end of October.

With the generous grant from 100+ Women Who Care Northumberland GRCA staff will be reshaping the beaver ponds to be accessible to all participants.

The beaver pond rehabilitation project will be three main components:

  1. Trail redesign and modification: widening the main path from the current trail system (approximately 150 metres of trail), applying a 3-inch layer of compactable crushed lime, and tamping the trail
  2. Building and installing a 20 foot long by 12-foot-wide anchored dock with a 6-foot wide by 5 feet long ramp with handrails
  3. Purchase and install several wheelchair anchors, a hydraulic 5-point harness chair, a modified fishing pole rail to hold an array of different length pond nets with swivel posts attached

The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority would like to personally thank Olie Bondareva for the nomination and all the members of 100+ Women Who Care Northumberland for their generosity and supporting the project.
